As with many people I talked to yesterday, laziness worked in my favor. I was planning to travel into Manhattan in the early morning, but I stayed in bed. Two days ago, I had run an errand two blocks from the Trade Center, and this morning, my apartment reeks of the smoke from the fires. My heart goes out to all of the people who are still waiting on news from loved ones. Thank you everyone who has written asking about me. Call your loved ones and tell them you love them.

It seems that the fabulous people at Boston Magazine have bestowed upon me the title of "Folk Lord." This evocative feather in my cap, which conjures up images of Woodie Guthrie and J.R.R. Tolkien, has inspired me again to change my name. Now instead of "Boston-Music-Award-Winner Nate Borofsky," I shall be known simply as "Lord Borofsky" or perhaps "my Lord." Any thoughts? my... baby...
OH... MY... GOD!!! Tonight, on my birthday, no less, I had the profound good fortune of WINNING the 2001 BOSTON MUSIC AWARD for Best New Singer-Songwriter!! It has changed my whole identity - I'm no longer Nate Borofsky; I'm "Boston-Music-Award-Winner Nate Borofsky" (but you can still call me "Nate" for short). The award was presented in an Oscar-style ceremony, with the very cool members of Heidi opening the envelope and reading my name. I know it's such the cliché, but I REALLY didn't expect it! I didn't have anything resembling a speech planned. My incredible heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for me in the public ballots, as well as to the venerable and enlightened members of the undisclosed "industry panel" (whomever you are). This has been the best birthday present EVER!

Mark the date, everyone. I, Nate Borofsky, have been nominated for a 2001 Boston Music Award for Best New Singer-Songwriter!! This is the first time that the gods of the Boston music industry have showered me with such glory. Even more exciting is the fact that ANYONE in Boston can vote for the winner! All you have to do is buy a Boston Herald on Friday (through March 2nd, 2001) and mail in the free ballot inside. Have you ever thought about how you could take all of the newspapers out of those newspaper vending boxes, but you don't have a reason to? Now HERE'S a reason! Don't feel guilty. You're dealing a blow to the multi-national big-business-run media industry AND voting (hopefully for me). For more info on the Boston Music Awards, you can go to http://www.nemoboston.com. Other very talented nominees in this category are Laura Higgins, Deb Talen, Stephen Kellogg, and Howie Day.

Well, now I'm here in my new apartment in Brooklyn. I drove a rental truck down with my friends Doris and Steve. There was a huge rain storm throughout the whole trip. We pulled into a rest stop on the Mass Pike, and the power had just gone out, so we got to pee in the dark. Then the Pizza Hut-Taco Bell employees started giving away free pizzas and burritos, because they would otherwise spoil. We took many of each. Once we were in Connecticut, the rain really started coming down in buckets, and the wind began to blow the truck all over the road. Outside of Hartford, the windshield wiper started making a weird sound, and it suddenly flew well past the windshield onto the driver's side door, where it lodged itself. We all screamed, tried to figure out where the breakdown lane was, and somehow managed to pull the truck over into it. It took an hour for the Penske repair guy to find us, and over an hour for him to fix it. It was infuriating, terrifying, and kind of fun. All in all, an appropriate move for me.

- Okay, so last night, I was playing a house concert in Boston. It was me, Rob Laurens, Summer Pierre, and Beth Amsel. Just before playing, I grabbed some peanuts and a glass of wine. I ate the peanuts, and had a sip of the wine. When I started to play, I suddenly lost control of my voice. It was hoarse, and I couldn't hold a pitch very well. It was like I'd suddenly developed laryngitis. I tried drinking water and clearing my throat, nothing helped. The last few songs were really hard to sing, and I don't think they sounded very good. Afterwards, I started to panic. I couldn't understand how it had happened. Was it the one sip of wine I had? Was I starting to get sick from the cold weather? I was talking with some people about it afterwards, and I could hardly speak, my voice was so raspy. Then I coughed, and a large chunk of peanut dislodged itself from my throat. Suddenly I could speak perfectly.

I was embarrassed, revolted, shocked, and ecstatic that that was all that was the matter. My apologies to the audience members last night. I'll try to eat more slowly from now on.

- Well, the CD release show went fabulous. Cambridge's legendary Club Passim was filled up - on a Wednesday night, no less. Many, many thanks to all of the musicians who made it all possible: Cathy Chalmers, Richard Gates, Sean Staples, Daniel Barrett, Kristin Cifelli, and the garden verge (Doris Muramatsu and Tammy Greenstein).

And yes, the rumors are true. At the end of December, I will be moving to glorious New York City. As many people who read my lyrics know, I've been in a long distance relationship for a LONG time (over 3 years). I decided it was time to get over my hangups of the big City and leave my safe harbor of Somerville, MA. But don't fret, Massachusettsians - I'll be back up here quite often playing and the like. And all of my contact info will stay the same (it will be forwarded for now).
